Philips has proved itself as a manufacturer of the phones with rather a long battery life, thus for Xenium it was a record in its class. The company couldn’t support its reputation and represented model 650 equipped with a color screen in a clamshell form-factor. De facto it is a continuation of Xenium series that was waited for so long. The specifications of the battery life announced for the model are so high that one gets amazed. The declared time of the standby mode is about one month, in spite of two displays and the large inner one. It would seem that power saving technologies by the company have won and a technological hitch was made but in reality everything is not so cheerful and unambiguous. Taking into consideration the fact that the model is technologically a complete analog of the current devices by Philips without a camera, let’s start with the design.

There is an insertion of plastic on the front panel, when touching it you have got a feeling like it is a rubber, it is a bit rough and that provides excellent look and feeling when you touch it. Different colors of the model are the result of such insertions and the rest of the body is silvery (there is also an insertion on the back side of the device). Also you can see a loud speaker hole on the front panel. I will point out that despite the loud speaker hole its volume level is twice lower in a closed mode than in the opened one. It is a pity because when the volume is maximum, the call signal is not very loud but distinguishable. That leads to the fact that you miss a call. The low power of the loud speaker showed an attempt of the company to decrease energy consumption. Further we will often speak about different contrivances to lower energy consumption in the device. The device may be opened with one hand and it makes no troubles. Inside you will see a large TFT 65K screen (128×160 pixels, 32×38 mm). The screen can display up to 7 text lines (for looking through short messages) and up to two service lines.

Panasonic RP-HTX7

Tightness is not a problem with these phones because of the vinyl-wrapped metal headband. This is great because it’s impossible to overextend them–you just bend them back into shape with no trouble.  The Sheckler Signature model of these phones is the least expensive by at least 20 dollars when I bought it (maybe his sponsorship [...]

Sony DR-BT30Q

A great idea or just another pointless use of wireless technology? I?ve spent a few months using the Sony DR-BT30Q stereo Bluetooth headphones, and thought it might be useful for some people for me to post my thoughts on this desirable gadget and my views on the technology behind it. A2DP, more commonly known as Bluetooth [...]

Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA6
15 Mar 2010

The VPC-CA6 is a an extremely small SD-card based video and still camera; our product review sample came in a box that proclaimed it was the “blue” variant (with a “red” and “silver” variant also available), but that’s a strange definer of the camera, as it’s actually only the bezel around the foldout LCD that [...]

The Hitachi DZ-H303 already was announced in Japan a month ago. It looks like Hitachi is bringing the DZ-HS301 also to Europe soon and eventually to the United States. The Hitachi DZ-HS301 features a 15x optical zoom, 1MP still photos and a 2.7 widescreen LCD. The Hitachi DZ-HS303 sports a better CCD sensor and takes [...]

Canon ZR700
14 Mar 2010

The Canon ZR700 tops off the ZR series this year, which has undergone serious cosmetic changes, including a new joystick control. How does the ZR700 hope to distinguish itself? The differences from next step-down, the ZR600, are small but crucial, including the analog inputs. Combine this with a 30x optical zoom and solid low light [...]
