The Philips Fisio 820 is sturdily built and includes a choice set of features at an appealing price. However, it’s let down by a poor user interface, unintuitive menu and clumsily designed keypad. There’s no doubt that colour has some benefits. Asia, for example, has already embraced colour, with uses ranging from Java-games to sending attachments via MMS (Multimedia Messaging Services). However, while colour is mainly of cosmetic benefit, the Fisio 820’s lack of infrared and tri-band support is more serious. That said, if you’re not a regular traveller to the US and don’t use infrared, the cost savings will be welcome. Not all service providers offer GPRS stateside anyway, and the provision of Bluetooth provides one method of PC connectivity.

The software provided lets you access the integrated modem via Bluetooth and take advantage of GPRS, with four slots giving a maximum download speed of 53.6Kbits/sec. Once the Data Connect software has detected the phone, a Wizard will guide you through the modem configuration. You can also use the software to synchronise the phone’s agenda and address book with your PC or PDA.

The Philips Fisio 620 is a lightweight, pocket-sized phone that is very comfortable to hold. It measures 104 x 46 x 20mm and weighs in at 85g. Enhancing the comfy feeling is a soft rubbery back case which Philips dubs “softskin”. It feels peculiar at first, even slippery, but does prevent the phone from sliding from your hands. If you’re not keen on the “softskin”, you can choose the silver-blue version instead.A groovy feature included on this mobile is a variable two-colour backlight. There are red and green backlights and you can choose a setting on a scale from one (green screen) to seven (red screen) with an amber colour in the middle. We found the green screen slightly brighter at night, but as red screen phones are not as common, we opted for the latter.

Two e-mail accounts can be set up on the phone with messages sent and received over your choice of GPRS or GSM. Attachments can also be viewed, providing they’re either plain text, 24bit encoded JPEG, or an attached e-mail. There is a note in the manual that if the e-mail is over 10Kb, it is rejected and the download is cancelled. There is a wireless application protocol (WAP) hotkey to open the WAP browser if those services appeal to you. A big plus is the durable battery life, which Philips boasts at a maximum of 330 hours of stand-by or 4.5 hours of talk time. We switched on the phone at 4pm Wednesday and with normal usage the phone lasted 102 hours, finally conking out at 10pm Sunday. It took only 40 minutes to fully recharge the battery.

The Philips Xenium 9@9 , is meant for the user who wants a basic cell phone without any fancy functions whatsoever. The heavy duty battery allows the user to do just the, chat away without a concern. Since there are no battery draining functions or accessories such as a color display or digital camera it seems that the battery goes on forever. Truth being that the Xenium is powered by a standard Li-Ion battery with a company claimed standby of 750 hours with a talk time of 7 hours and 30 minutes. This handset which weighs a mere 93 gms has a monochrome display which has a size of 101 x 80 pixels and can show up to 8 lines of text. The display has a white backlight which makes it easy to read the text / display even during complete darkness at the same time unlike other displays which become difficult to read in direct sunlight, the Xenium behaves nicely and avoids inconvenience to the user.

For better network connectivity the Philips Xenium 9@9 supports for Dual-band GSM 900/ GSM 1800 MHz. For data transfer it does supports connectivity WAP browser.
